What Amazonbot does

Amazonbot is Amazon's general-purpose crawler, described by Amazon as used to improve its products and services. It is the broadest of Amazon's three tokens and the least specific about what it does with what it collects.

Because Amazon separates search into Amzn-SearchBot and user fetches into Amzn-User, disallowing Amazonbot is closer to a training and product-development opt-out than to a visibility decision.

Amazon publishes its IP ranges on a maintained page rather than as a JSON file, which makes automated verification more work than it is for OpenAI, Google or Perplexity.

Amazonbot is not Amzn-SearchBot

Amazonbot is the general improve-our-products crawler. Amzn-SearchBot is the one that decides whether Amazon's search experiences can show you.

How to block Amazonbot

Add this to the robots.txt at the root of your domain, alongside what is already there rather than replacing it.

robots.txt

User-agent: Amazonbot
Disallow: /

What that costs you: Nothing for the search surfaces, which Amzn-SearchBot governs separately.

To allow it instead, write nothing. A crawler with no group of its own follows your User-agent: * rules, and giving it a named group with Allow: / detaches it from those rules entirely — including any path you disallow there.

Find it in your logs

Amazon names the token but does not publish a full user-agent string for it, so match on the token itself.

To find every visit it has made, and the addresses it came from:

Terminal

grep -F 'Amazonbot' /var/log/nginx/access.log | awk '{print $1}' | sort | uniq -c | sort -rn

Check that it is really Amazonbot

A user agent is a string the visitor chooses, so on its own it proves nothing — anyone can send yours. Amazon publishes the addresses Amazonbot fetches from: a list maintained at the page Amazon maintains. Take an address out of your logs and check it against that list.

False means something else is wearing the name, and it is under no obligation to respect anything in your robots.txt. That is the traffic worth blocking at the edge, rather than the crawler that was asking politely.

Should you block Amazonbot?

A reasonable thing to block if you do not want your pages feeding Amazon's product development, and it costs you nothing on Amazon's search surfaces, which are governed by Amzn-SearchBot.

As always, the thing to avoid is blocking all three Amazon tokens with one pasted snippet when only one of them was the point.

Questions

Does blocking Amazonbot remove me from Amazon search?
No. That is Amzn-SearchBot. Amazon documents three tokens for three jobs, and a rule naming one does not apply to the others.

The user agent and IP figures on this page were read from Amazon’s own URLs on 14 September 2026. Blocking figures come from our survey of 170 well-known sites across 10 categories on 14 September 2026, 148 of which returned a readable robots.txt.

Is Amazonbot allowed on your site right now?
